Privacy Policy

1.Who we are

MaritimeMentor ("we", "us") operates the MaritimeMentor website and chat service. This policy explains what data the service handles, where it lives, and what you can do about it. It is written to be consistent with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

2.Data we handle

Depending on how you use the service, this includes:

  • Account details — the name and email address you provide when signing up
  • Chat content — the questions you ask and the answers generated
  • Chat history — conversations stored so you can resume them
  • Technical data — your IP address and request timestamps, processed to rate-limit the service and prevent abuse

3.Where your data lives

During the current preview period, the service is deliberately minimal about data storage:

Your chat history and session details are stored locally in your own browser (localStorage). They never leave your device unless you send them as part of a question. You can delete them at any time from the account page, or by clearing your browser data.

When you ask a question, the message and its recent conversation context are transmitted to our server, processed to generate an answer, and then discarded. We do not maintain a server-side database of your conversations in the preview.

4.How we use your data

We process data only to:

  • Generate answers to your questions
  • Operate and secure the service, including rate limiting and abuse prevention
  • Provide the features you use, such as chat history and account management

5.Third-party processors

The service relies on a small number of third parties to function:

Vercel — hosts the website and processes requests, including your IP address for security and rate limiting.

AI providers (via OpenRouter) — receive your question and recent conversation context in order to generate a response. Content is transmitted to generate your answer and is not used by us to train models.

As the service grows, this list will be kept current on this page.

6.AI processing

To answer a question, the text you type — together with the recent messages in that conversation — is sent to a third-party AI provider. Treat anything you would not share with an external service accordingly: do not submit confidential company procedures, personal data about others, or anything covered by a non-disclosure agreement.

7.Retention and deletion

Chat history and session data are stored in your browser until you delete them. You can clear all chat history from the account page, or remove everything (including your session) by clearing your browser's site data.

Server-side, question text is processed transiently and is not retained after the answer is delivered. Rate-limiting data (IP address and counts) is kept in memory only, for at most one hour.

8.Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights over your personal data, including the right to access it, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to its processing, and data portability. Because preview-period data lives in your browser, most of these rights can be exercised directly by you — clearing site data deletes everything.

If you have questions or requests about your data, contact us through the details on the landing page.

9.Children

The service is intended for maritime professionals and students and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.

10.Changes to this policy

We will update this policy as the service evolves — particularly when accounts, sync, or payments are introduced. The "last updated" date at the top will always show the current version, and material changes will be highlighted on the site.

11.Contact

Questions about privacy can be sent through the contact details on our landing page.
